Robert Willem Philip, 9 February 1969, Apeldoorn

From 1989 until 1994 I studied at the Utrecht School of the Arts. In June 1994 I obtained my diploma.

During my study I did an apprenticeship at Hannes Wallrafen and Thijs Wolzak and worked as freelance photography assistant.

Since 1993 I took part in several group presentations, among others: the photo festival Naarden (1993), Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam (1995), Vondelkerk in Amsterdam (1995), Bergkerk in Deventer (1996), the ‘Kunstpaleis’ in Deventer (1997 and 1998) and PrivéDomein in Amsterdam (1998), O’Hare Int. Airport in Chicago (2001), theatre ‘De Leeuwenbrug’ in Deventer (2002), ‘Ten years documentary photography in the Netherlands’ in the FOAM in Amsterdam (2003), 'Fotografie assorti'; I was co-curator of the GKf exhibition at ‘DE nederlandsche CACAOFABRIEK’ in Helmond (2004), something I did again for the GKf exhibition 'Verborgen Verhalen' (Hidden Stories) at the Melkweg Gallery in Amsterdam (2006), the Municipal Gallery Arsenal in Poznan, Poland (2007).

I have had some solo exhibitions too, among others: arthouse ‘De Keizer’ in Deventer (1993), Fotoforum Foundation in Amersfoort (1995), gallery ‘De Kazerne’ in Amsterdam (1995), theatre ‘de Leeuwenbrug’ in Deventer (1996), arthouse in Arnhem (1997), ‘Hema Kijkkasten’ in Amsterdam (1999), Museum ‘Het Valkhof’ in Nijmegen (2000), the Melkweg Gallery in Amsterdam (2000), Waterschap Veld en Vecht in Coevorden (2002), gallery ‘De Paraplu’ in Deventer (2004), the University of Twente (2006), the Epson PhotoFestival Naarden (2007), the Contemporary Art Gallery of the Brukenthal Museum in Sibiu, Romania (2007).

In 1995 I was admitted at the GKf, the association for professional photographers.

My work has been bought by several companies and individuals. It has among others been published in daily paper Trouw and in several magazines such as Camera Austria, Parmentier, Filosofie Magazine, Psychologie, Vrij Nederland en Squeeze.

In 1998 I received a grant from the Foundation Anna Cornelis for a photo project on male prostitution, the book about this project was published early 2006. In the spring of 2000 I published my first photo book about the monastery and home for elderly priests Berchamanianum at Nijmegen. I received grants for my work from The Mondriaan Foundation, Prins Bernard Culture Foundation and the Amsterdam Arts Foundation. In 2001 I received the City Award of Delden.

Of course I am also active as a freelance photographer and have worked for several graphic designers, publishers and magazines. This consisted mainly of portrait-, documentary- and architecture photography.

Since 2002 I’m teaching photography at the Utrecht School of the Arts and since 2007 I also teach photography at the School for Fine Art & Design Minerva in Groningen. In 2007 I've started a master study 'Teaching in Higher Education' at the VU university.
