Since 2003 I started to photograph men who are in their first year of fatherhood. I started this project because I wanted to capture the pride, love and vulnerability of men who start a new chapter in their lives; being a father. I was curious if they had the same connection as the mothers often display.
I deliberately chose the ‘Madonna with child’ pose and only natural light for many of there portraits. My large view camera made sure that the work process was slow and the concentration high.
The intention was to make another book, but my personal life was in turmoil (see ‘Realm’ and ‘Paul’s Last Journey’ in this section), so it never happened. Although never published, I am still very content about this project. I think it is worth seeing that men are capable of unconditional love.
